The article outlines the academic career paths at German Universities of Applied Sciences. It describes the example of a professional tenure track model recently implemented at Ansbach University of Applied Sciences. A professional tenure track model enables candidates from the business sector to obtain a PhD before the appointment to a professorship. This has multiple advantages in terms of personnel and university development: from better research capacities over more vital teaching skills to a long-needed rise in gender equality. The end of the article explains what needs to be considered to effectively use the potential of tenure track models at the Universities of Applied Sciences.
