Breaking the Silence: Investigating Which Types of Moderation Reduce Negative Effects of Sexist Social Media Content

Sasse, Julia; Grossklags, Jens (2023)

26th ACM Conference On Computer-Supported Cooperative Work And Social Computing (CSCW), Minneapolis, USA.

Open Access Peer Reviewed

Sexist content is widespread on social media and can reduce women's psychological well-being and their willingness to participate in online discourse, making it a societal issue. To counter these effects, social media platforms employ moderators. To date, little is known about the effectiveness of different forms of moderation in creating a safe space and their acceptance, in particular from the perspective of women as members of the targeted group and users in general (rather than perpetrators). In this research, we propose that some common forms of moderation can be systematized along two facets of visibility, namely visibility of sexist content and of counterspeech. In an online experiment (N = 839), we manipulated these two facets and tested how they shaped social norms, feelings of safety, and intent to participate, as well as fairness, trustworthiness, and efficacy evaluations. In line with our predictions, deletion of sexist content - i.e., its invisibility - and (public) counterspeech - i.e., its visibility - against visible sexist content contributed to creating a safe space. Looking at the underlying psychological mechanism, we found that these effects were largely driven by changes in what was perceived normative in the presented context. Interestingly, deletion of sexist content was judged as less fair than counterspeech against visible sexist content. Our research contributes to a growing body of literature that highlights the importance of norms in creating safer online environments and provides practical implications for moderators for selecting actions that can be effective and accepted.

Influence of storage condition of PVC rooftop sheets on the hot Air welding process

One of the common welding methods for polymer rooftop sheets is the overlap welding by hot air either done manually for small parts or with a welding machine for long sheets. The weld quality depends on different parameters like the welding speed, the welding temperature or the pressure applied on the joining materials. Due to the field of application of rooftop sheets, there are other environmental influences like the ambient temperature, the air humidity or direct sunshine which can cause a decrease of the welding quality. This work will focus on a pre welding influence, the storage temperature of the rooftop sheets and how it affects the welding quality. Two poly vinyl chloride (PVC) rooftop sheets were chosen and tested separately. The materials were cut into small sheets, stored under different temperature conditions, and were welded afterwards. The welded samples were tested according to the DIN EN 12317-2 to determine the shear resistance of the weld as it is an important mechanical property and a good indicator for the quality of the weld. The results show a minor influence on the welding process but no influence on the quality of the weld itself as all weld lines of all samples managed to stay intact

Influence of Fused Filament Fabrication Raster Parameters Over the Top Surface Topography

Fused Filament Fabrication builds parts layer-wise by depositing molten thermoplastic in the shape of filaments. Those are characterized by thickness and width. Together with the deposition speed, they determine the material flow. Depending on the extrusion system melting capacity and the considered materials, the flow can be limited to a certain degree, leading to under-extrusion. Slicing tools such as Cura allows filaments to overlap to compensate for under-extrusion and prevent voids formation. However, if the superposition is too high, the melt is squeezed out of the deposition path, affecting the surface quality. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of raster width, angle, overlap, and deposition speed over the top surface topography of samples printed of ABS, ASA, and PC. The results show that the rasters’ width and overlap significantly influence top surface topography.

Finding the required information to succeed in the organisation of everyday study life is not always easy for a student. Ontologies are an instrument to define a domain by illustrating its concepts and thereby presenting knowledge in a structured way. In this paper, our aim is to design an ontology that is suitable for the higher education environment of a German university to build a Knowledge Graph for a conversational AI. As a research context, the Ansbach University of Applied Science is used. The paper is organised into five sections. After a brief introduction in Section 1, Section 2 reviews previous work of conducted ontologies within the higher education environment, whereas Section 3 outlines the methodology for developing the ontology and presents the final result. The development procedure is thereby partly based on the ontology framework provided by Stanford University (Noy & McGuinness, 2001). The presented ontology, which delivers possible classes for the development, and transferability to other universities will then be discussed in Section 4. Finally, the conclusion and approaches for future work with ensuring a constant up-to-dateness of the classes are given in Section 5.
